Is Liposuction For You?
Liposuction is a good treatment option for patients who maintain a healthy weight but have stubborn pockets of fat that are difficult to eliminate, even with a healthy lifestyle. Patients interested in liposuction should have taut skin because liposuction cannot treat loose or sagging skin. Additionally, liposuction is not a solution for weight loss. Females undergoing liposuction should have no plans to become pregnant because this may compromise their results. During your consultation, Dr. Chiddy will set realistic expectations.
What are the benefits of liposuction?
Dr. Chiddy thoroughly understands how frustrating it can be to have stubborn pockets of fat on your body. Perhaps you have tried a variety of weight loss programs with little to no success, or consistent exercise has not been enough to help you achieve the shapely figure you desire. Fortunately, liposuction is an excellent option for patients who want to enhance their appearance and confidence. When performed by a skilled doctor, liposuction can produce beautiful results.
How is Liposuction Performed?
VASER-assisted liposuction is performed as an outpatient procedure in our private AAAASF-accredited surgical suite. Compared to normal liposuction techniques, VASER-assisted liposuction creates a smaller incision and uses unique soundwaves to help dissolve the fat. To help keep you comfortable, a member of our team will administer general anesthesia. At the beginning of your procedure, Dr. Chiddy makes a punch-hole incision through the skin and inserts a cannula into the treatment spot. A cannula is a special tool that makes it easier to loosen and remove fatty tissue. After eliminating the fat, Dr. Chiddy will close the incision. Based on the number of sections treated, your surgery could take 1 – 3 hours. In a separate recovery area, your post-op nurse will help you manage any pain and look after your treatment areas until you are eligible for discharge.
What Can I Expect After Liposuction?
Depending on the number of sections treated and the size of the treatment area, you may need to recover at home for about 1 – 3 weeks. Typically, patients experience some bruising and swelling for 1 – 2 weeks, and you will need to have your stitches removed in about 7 – 10 days after surgery. One of the most important things after undergoing surgery is to give your body a chance to heal and recover. Once you return to your daily routine, you will need to minimize stress and strenuous activity. To increase your strength and stamina, we recommend sticking to light workouts and going for walks. Please keep in mind that you may see some improvements soon after your surgery, but it takes 6 – 10 months until your new body shape and contour are attained.
Liposuction FAQ
How much does liposuction cost?
Your cost for liposuction varies based on the technique selected and how many areas are being addressed. During your consultation, Dr. Chidester will create your unique treatment plan based on your needs and goals. He will also take into consideration your budget. Once your plan is ready, estimated costs will be discussed. To make your surgery affordable, Jerry Chidester, MD Plastic & Hand Surgery accepts several payment methods, and we can help you find low-interest financing.
What about nonsurgical liposuction?
Thanks to modern advancements, there are several nonsurgical procedures to reduce fat. Some of the most popular methods are CoolSculpting®, UltraShape®, Vanquish, Liposonix, and KYBELLA®. While some of these nonsurgical procedures can help some patients reduce mild to moderate fat pockets, liposuction is best for most patients. Liposuction surgery delivers more dramatic and consistent results. Ask Dr. Chidester about nonsurgical liposuction in your consultation. He can explain the benefits of all your options and help you decide which is best for you.
What about cellulite and loose skin?
Surgical liposuction only corrects excess fat. If you have loose skin, Dr. Chidester may suggest combining liposuction with a lift surgery. Liposuction is often performed along with skin tightening surgery, such as a tummy tuck, arm lift, or thighplasty — to give you your best results. To correct cellulite, there are several minimally invasive and nonsurgical treatments, including Cellulaze, VelaShape®, VASER Shape®, and Venus Freeze™. In your consultation, tell Dr. Chidester about all your concerns like loose skin and cellulite so your best treatment plan is created.
Will I have scars after liposuction?
Since liposuction is an invasive surgery, incisions will need to be made and sutured. These will cause scars, but Dr. Chidester does his best to reduce their appearance. This starts with making thin incisions in the natural folds of your body or less visible areas. After your surgery, Dr. Chidester or a member of his team will teach you how to care for your incisions — so they heal flat and eventually fade.
Will my liposuction results last?
Before you have liposuction surgery, it is important to be prepared to maintain your results. While liposuction reduces the number of fat cells in an area, you can still gain and lose weight. Dr. Chidester suggests that you be at or near a healthy weight prior to liposuction. Afterward, it is best to stay within 5 – 10 pounds of your post-surgical weight. Getting pregnant after liposuction will also affect your results; however, another surgery like a mommy makeover can be performed to refresh your appearance.
Is liposuction painful?
No. Patients will be under the effects of anesthesia during the procedure. Afterwards, once the effects have worn off, there may be some mild soreness or discomfort. However, this can be easily managed and will slowly fade throughout the coming days and weeks.
