What is BOTOX?

At Dr. Jerry Chidester's office, preventing the early signs of aging on the upper face is easy to do with BOTOX injections. We can also use BOTOX as a preventive treatment to reduce the appearance of future wrinkles. Plastic surgeon Dr. Chiddy is proud to provide a nonsurgical solution, like BOTOX injections, to his Draper, UT community.

This noninvasive procedure helps patients achieve youthful-looking skin. BOTOX is made from a clean strain of botulinum toxin (type A), which temporarily "freezes" the upper facial muscles. The wrinkles that develop from constant facial muscle contractions are called dynamic. Eventually, these dynamic wrinkles stay visible, even when the face is completely relaxed. BOTOX injectable treatments can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by limiting facial expressions and providing the skin a chance to smooth itself without interference. Additionally, BOTOX can help patients who suffer from hyperhidrosis, which causes excessive sweating. If needed, Dr. Chiddy can place it under the armpits to help reduce sweating.

Is BOTOX For You?

BOTOX is a nonsurgical treatment that helps patients reduce and soften the appearance of facial wrinkles and creases. Patients can also use BOTOX as a preventive treatment, even if they are younger. It works well for forehead wrinkles, glabellar lines between the brows, or fine lines around the eyes. If you experience more severe wrinkles, Dr. Chiddy may suggest combining BOTOX and a dermal filler. Also, for patients over the age of 50 who have a lot of skin laxity, a facelift may provide stronger results. Based on your degree of skin elasticity and cosmetic goals, Dr. Chiddy will help you determine if BOTOX treatments work best for you.

Our Injection Technique

Taking about 10 – 15 minutes to complete, we perform BOTOX injectable treatments as an outpatient procedure. Usually, Dr. Chiddy can administer BOTOX injections on the same day as your consultation. Using the upper face, patients will make a variety of expressions, such as squinting or frowning. The facial expressions help us determine where to inject the BOTOX. Dr. Chiddy often places BOTOX injections in between the brows, around the eyes (Crow's feet), and across the forehead. Once he has marked the injection sites, your face is cleaned, and BOTOX is administered with a fine needle. To reduce swelling, bruising, and discomfort, Dr. Chiddy uses a cold compress on the treatment areas. You can request a numbing cream to make the procedure more comfortable. However, because the procedure uses a thin needle, most patients find that they do not need it. Following your appointment, you can resume your normal routine with no required recovery.

What to Expect

After your treatment, you can resume your daily routine. However, patients should avoid strenuous exercise for at least a day. Dr. Chiddy also recommends sleeping upright for the first night and not touching your face, which can accidentally spread BOTOX to other areas. For 2 – 3 days, the injection sites may appear slightly bruised, swollen, or red, but you will not experience any serious or lasting side effects. Typically, it takes about one week before seeing your final BOTOX results. Once completely healed, your results usually last 3 – 4 months. During your consultation, Dr. Chiddy will discuss when to schedule your follow-up appointments.
