what are my breast Implant Options?

During your consultation with Dr. Chiddy, he will listen to your goals and determine the best treatment type. If surgical breast augmentation is right for you, he will select the best implant type based on your body size and shape. To help you reach your desired appearance, breast implants are made in different sizes, shapes, and textures. Generally, Dr. Chiddy uses implants made from saline or silicone. Both are widely used and approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). To undergo breast augmentation, patients must be at least 18 years old to receive saline implants or at least 22 years old for silicone ones. Other options include gummy bear implants and fat grafting (known as a fat transfer).

Size

Breast implant size is determined based on the amount of saline or silicone used. To decide on the correct volume, Dr. Chiddy will assess how much natural breast tissue exists and the size you desire. In the operating room, it is common for Dr. Chiddy to temporarily switch out various implants to get an idea of a suitable fit.

Shape

Breast implants come in either a teardrop or round shape. Dr. Chiddy commonly uses both shapes; however, a large majority of our patients decide on a round implant. It often looks more natural while adding a fullness to the upper breast.

Profile

Implant profile refers to how far out the implant looks (projection). Meaning, this is what you see from the side view. The most common projections include low, intermediate, high, or extra high.

Making Your Choices

These options may seem overwhelming, but choosing the correct implant is somewhat easy once Dr. Chiddy understands your objectives. During your consultation, Dr. Chiddy will use his years of experience to select the best techniques and tailor the procedure so it matches your cosmetic goals.

Am I A candidate for breast augmentation?

The decision to go undergo breast enlargement surgery is personal. If you are contemplating this treatment, we highly recommend doing it for just yourself. To receive implants, patients should be at a healthy weight and appropriate age. If you are unhappy with the size and shape of your breasts, you may benefit from breast augmentation surgery. Additionally, if your breasts have changed because of weight loss or pregnancy, this surgery can enhance their natural beauty with increased shape and fullness. It can also help patients who weight train or have limited natural breast mass.

how does breast augmentation work?

Before your surgery, Dr. Chiddy will select the best incision type and implant placement. During breast augmentation, an incision is created and the appropriate breast implant is placed into position. As Dr. Chiddy inserts the implant, he will select the best placement method for you, such as submuscular placement or submammary/subglandular. The submuscular placement goes under the pec muscle, and the submammary/subglandular placement goes over the pec muscle. The placement of your breast implants depends on several factors, including the implant type, size, body type, and activity level. Regardless of the incision type, scarring is usually rare.

how long is recovery after breast augmentation surgery?

Dr. Chiddy performs breast augmentation as an outpatient procedure, and he uses general anesthesia to help keep you comfortable. Once the incision is made, the silicone or saline implant is placed through the incision opening, deposited into a surgical pocket, and secured into position. In some cases, patients may need extra soft tissue support to help hold the implant. If you do, Dr. Chiddy uses something called the GalaFORM 3D internal bra. Made from the same material as dissolvable sutures, this hammock-shaped mesh is placed inside the pocket with the implant for extra support. Over time, it will naturally dissolve and stimulate the production of collagen.

After placing the implant, the incision is carefully secured with sutures or surgical adhesives. Following the procedure, we will take you back to our private recovery room and monitor you before being released. One of our team members will provide detailed aftercare directions, which includes wearing a recovery compression bra to assist with swelling. Within a few days, the swelling and bruising will begin to decrease, and the breasts will start to feel normal as they get used to their new position. A large percentage of patients can resume normal activities within the first week; however, patients should avoid exercise for a minimum of 6 – 8 weeks. Breast implant surgery creates beautiful outcomes that look and feel natural Often, breast augmentation is a life-changer for many patients, allowing them the chance to feel more self-assured.

Breast Augmentation FAQ

How much does breast augmentation cost?
Your total cost for breast augmentation will vary based on your choices and whether you are having any other surgeries at the same time. As soon as your treatment plan is developed in your consultation, Dr. Chiddy will talk to you about estimated costs and financing options. To ensure your results match your goals and last a long time, it's important to focus on quality over low costs.

Do I need a breast lift or augmentation?
Your treatment plan may include implants, a lift, or both. A breast lift removes excess skin and improves the position of the breasts, while implants address the shape and size of the breasts. During your consultation with Dr. Chiddy, he will listen to your concerns and goals before discussing your treatment options. A combination augmentation and lift are often a part of a mommy makeover to revitalize the breasts after breastfeeding and pregnancy.

Can I breastfeed with implants?
If you want to breastfeed after breast augmentation, talk to Dr. Chiddy during your consultation. It is usually possible to breastfeed after implants, with the right placement and technique. Pregnancy and breastfeeding can alter your results, which is why it is best to wait until after you are done having children to have breast surgery.

Can I have my implants removed?
You might decide that you want to replace or remove your implants. If this happens, Dr. Chiddy can perform breast revision surgery. During the revision surgery, your current implants can either be replaced with different implants or removed. If you choose to have your implants removed, you might need to have a breast lift since larger implants can stretch your skin. For any concerns or questions after your augmentation surgery, schedule a consultation at Jerry Chidester, MD Plastic & Hand Surgery to discuss your options.

How long is the recovery period for breast augmentation?
Recovery from breast augmentation typically spans a few weeks. Patients may experience soreness, swelling, and restricted physical activity during this period. Adhering to postoperative care instructions is crucial for optimal healing.

Can breast augmentation be combined with other procedures?
