What is a Scar Revision Surgery?
As a common skin problem, scars can appear on any part of the body. For some people, a scar is an unwanted reminder of a traumatic injury, bad memory, health condition, or a life-changing surgery. While most scars aren't an issue, certain scars can make you feel embarrassed or cause uncomfortable symptoms. For many patients, they can look too big or wide, bumpy, dark, raised, or recessed. Based on the scar placement and its condition, scar revision surgery can dramatically improve how it looks. In Draper, UT, Dr. Jerry Chidester, or Dr. Chiddy, performs scar revision surgery, which helps reduce the size and improve the appearance of your scar.
Types of Scars
Patients can have various types of scars. The type of scar determines the appropriate surgical technique. The most common types of scars that Dr. Chiddy treats include:
- Superficial scars
Superficial scars are the subtlest types. Superficial scars don't cause any issue other than a blemished appearance.
- Keloid scars
Keloid scars are bigger in size and can sometimes have painful symptoms. The skin around the scar tends to look discolored and grows past the edges of the original wound.
- Hypertrophic scars
A hypertrophic scar can also look large in size. Over time, they may start to thicken and grow larger. Usually, hypertrophic scars do not expand beyond the wound site.
- Contracture scars
A contracture scar is more complicated because it develops across a bigger area of the skin. A burn is an example of this type of scar. In many cases, a contracture scar feels stretched and also limits movement in some patients.
"Did you know Dr. Chisester is also a reconstructive hand surgeon and hand specialist? My father was having major trouble with his hands for over a year. I direct messaged Dr. Chisester on Instagram and not only did HE respond, he took time to explain things my dad could do until he was able to get an appointment. My dad expressed how much he loved Dr. C during his appointments. He has amazing bed aide manner, an amazing staff, and truly cares about his patients, their happiness and really makes sure he provides stellar service! My dad was so happy with with him that I know for a fact if I ever chose plastic surgery or need a hand specialist he’s the only doctor I would contact and the only doctor I will recommend! Do yourself a favor and get on his books ASAP!!! Thank you Dr. Chidester and staff!!"- C.S. / Google / Jun 24, 2020

"Dr Chidester and his team are hands down the best. Worth the wait, get on a list. I am so happy with his work and expertise. He also found a hernia and repaired it while fixing my abdominal separation. I’m so grateful he would take the time to do that. I always felt I was in the best of hands. His PA Meg is so sweet and calming too."- M.K. / Google / Feb 25, 2021
"Dr. Chidester did a fantastic job on my mommy makeover. I had a breast augmentation (375 cc), lift, galaform, internal bra, liposuction on my flanks and back, and a tummy tuck. I drove from out of town and stayed in a nearby hotel for 5 days. I say him 24 hours after surgery and on day 5 to get my drains taken out. He has great bedside manner and his nurses are amazing. By day four, I was off all of the pain meds and only used Tylenol. By day 6, I felt good enough to go in a plane ride over the Grand Canyon. I am 8 weeks post op and am still in awe with the way my scars are healing. I am back to almost all of the activities I was prior to the surgery. No doubt.... the best experience you will have!!! I have no regrets and would do it all over again with Dr. Chiddy."- B.C. / Google / Feb 18, 2021
"Dr. Chidester removed a large bump that had been growing for the last six years on the back of my hand, directly beneath my pinky and ring fingers. If I hit that bump accidently on anything, I got a sharp pain that shot up from the bump up to my elbow, not a pleasant thing to go through. I had seen two doctors about the bump, and the only thing they offered up was to drain it, and warned me that it would start filling up with fluid again, especially "at my age"! This was not the case with Dr. Chidister, he examined the bump and said that he could remove it in just a few minutes, but it had to be done at Lone Peak Hospital because of Covid restrictions. The hospital and staff there are amazing! Well, the surgery was done, and I was out of there in just a few hours. On the third day after surgery I accidentally hit my hand on something, and I waited for the pain but there was none! I had not been in any pain, AT ALL my hand was tender where the bump used to be, but NO PAIN, I never even had to take as aspirin! I'm so blessed to have been guided to Dr. Chidester, he is an amazing doctor, he must have hand picked his staff because EVERY one I came in contact with, was friendly, outgoing, and professional. DR. CHIDESTER AND STAFF, YOU ARE THE BEST! Thank you all for taking care of me I'm thrilled to have had you all on my team! P.S. That bump turned out to be a tumor...no cancer!"- K.F. / Google / Feb 13, 2021
Is Scar Revision Right For You?
Anyone who has a scar that appears unsightly, bothersome, or causes insecurity and embarrassment may be good candidates for scar revision surgery. Before undergoing scar revision, Dr. Chiddy will help set realistic expectations. Usually, your scar reduces in appearance, but it won't completely go away. The type of surgery depends on several factors, such as the location of the scar, the type of scar, and the characteristics, like depth, shape, and size. After assessing your scar and listening to your cosmetic concerns, Dr. Chiddy will create a detailed treatment plan that addresses your needs.
Dr. Chiddy performs scar revision surgery in his private AAAASF-accredited surgical suite. Depending on your scar type and the surgical technique, Dr. Chiddy uses local anesthesia or sedation. If you have a bumpy or thick scar, he may use a shave excision to even out and level the scar. For larger and raised scars, he can decrease the size by using an elliptical incision. This technique removes the scar, some of the tissue, and the surrounding skin. Next, the skin is stitched close with a thin, clean line. If you have a scar that exists because of improper closure, this type of technique can dramatically improve the appearance.
Often, large scars or contracture scars need a skin graft or tissue expansion. If this type of method is needed, the original scar is removed, which allows Dr. Chiddy to suture the healthy skin together. Also, if you have a "pitted" scar, Dr. Chiddy may use an injectable dermal filler to smooth the skin.
What to Expect
After a scar revision treatment, wound care is the most important part of the healing process. Dr. Chiddy or a member of his staff will provide detailed instructions to help you care for your wound so the revised scar appears thinner, lighter, and smaller. Please keep in mind that the scar will not entirely go away, but well-performed scar revision treatments can lead to a natural and softer appearance. Additionally, you may also experience some side effects, such as swelling, discoloration, or discomfort for about 1 – 2 weeks.
Improve Your Scar's Appearance
If you have an unattractive scar that troubles you, Dr. Chiddy offers a variety of treatment techniques to make it less visible. After examining the size, shape, type, and depth of your scar, you will receive a personalized treatment plan that addresses your concerns. The front office team can provide information about the cost or financing through Prosper and Mountain America Credit Union. Using surgical techniques, Dr. Chiddy reshapes the scar and the surrounding skin for a more natural-looking appearance.
