What is a Scar Revision Surgery?

As a common skin problem, scars can appear on any part of the body. For some people, a scar is an unwanted reminder of a traumatic injury, bad memory, health condition, or a life-changing surgery. While most scars aren't an issue, certain scars can make you feel embarrassed or cause uncomfortable symptoms. For many patients, they can look too big or wide, bumpy, dark, raised, or recessed. Based on the scar placement and its condition, scar revision surgery can dramatically improve how it looks. In Draper, UT, Dr. Jerry Chidester, or Dr. Chiddy, performs scar revision surgery, which helps reduce the size and improve the appearance of your scar.

Types of Scars

Patients can have various types of scars. The type of scar determines the appropriate surgical technique. The most common types of scars that Dr. Chiddy treats include:

  • Superficial scars
Superficial scars are the subtlest types. Superficial scars don't cause any issue other than a blemished appearance.
  • Keloid scars
Keloid scars are bigger in size and can sometimes have painful symptoms. The skin around the scar tends to look discolored and grows past the edges of the original wound.
  • Hypertrophic scars
A hypertrophic scar can also look large in size. Over time, they may start to thicken and grow larger. Usually, hypertrophic scars do not expand beyond the wound site.
  • Contracture scars
A contracture scar is more complicated because it develops across a bigger area of the skin. A burn is an example of this type of scar. In many cases, a contracture scar feels stretched and also limits movement in some patients.

Is Scar Revision Right For You?

Anyone who has a scar that appears unsightly, bothersome, or causes insecurity and embarrassment may be good candidates for scar revision surgery. Before undergoing scar revision, Dr. Chiddy will help set realistic expectations. Usually, your scar reduces in appearance, but it won't completely go away. The type of surgery depends on several factors, such as the location of the scar, the type of scar, and the characteristics, like depth, shape, and size. After assessing your scar and listening to your cosmetic concerns, Dr. Chiddy will create a detailed treatment plan that addresses your needs.

Surgical Technique

Dr. Chiddy performs scar revision surgery in his private AAAASF-accredited surgical suite. Depending on your scar type and the surgical technique, Dr. Chiddy uses local anesthesia or sedation. If you have a bumpy or thick scar, he may use a shave excision to even out and level the scar. For larger and raised scars, he can decrease the size by using an elliptical incision. This technique removes the scar, some of the tissue, and the surrounding skin. Next, the skin is stitched close with a thin, clean line. If you have a scar that exists because of improper closure, this type of technique can dramatically improve the appearance.

Often, large scars or contracture scars need a skin graft or tissue expansion. If this type of method is needed, the original scar is removed, which allows Dr. Chiddy to suture the healthy skin together. Also, if you have a "pitted" scar, Dr. Chiddy may use an injectable dermal filler to smooth the skin.

What to Expect

After a scar revision treatment, wound care is the most important part of the healing process. Dr. Chiddy or a member of his staff will provide detailed instructions to help you care for your wound so the revised scar appears thinner, lighter, and smaller. Please keep in mind that the scar will not entirely go away, but well-performed scar revision treatments can lead to a natural and softer appearance. Additionally, you may also experience some side effects, such as swelling, discoloration, or discomfort for about 1 – 2 weeks.
